Information Reviewed: Could You Go Home in a Wheelchair?

Overview:

If you suddenly had to use a wheelchair, could you do so in the house that you live in now? Most people couldn't because conventional houses aren't built for wheelchair users. Think: how wide are your doors? Can you reach light switches from a seated position? Would a wheelchair fit in your bathroom?

Here are some need-to-know measurements from Richard Senelick, medical director at the HealthSouth Rehabilitation Institute of San Antonio.

  • A 5' diameter between bathroom fixtures is ideal.
  • Sinks should be no higher than 2' and 10" inches and have space to roll up and leg room.
  • Door knobs should be 36" from the ground.
  • The best bed height is 20."
  • Vinyl or short-napped carpet is best for wheelchairs.
  • Electrical outlets should be 24" from the floor.
