Overview:

Gaining freedom on the road starts with an evaluation of driving needs such as muscle strength, coordination, and reaction time. How much space is needed for passengers? Is a van necessary or will another vehicle accommodate necessary equipment?

Picking the right car may depend on costs. Today a new vehicle with modifications can cost from $20,000 to $80,000. To find programs that can help pay for these vehicles, start with the state department of vocational rehabilitation, department of veteran affairs (if appropriate), or other agencies offering vocational services. Also check with nonprofit associations, health insurance carriers, and vehicle manufacturers offering rebates or reimbursements such as Daimler Chrysler, Ford, General Motors, Saturn, Volkswagen, and Audi. In some states, the sales tax may be waived if a physician recommends the adaptations.

Choosing a qualified dealer with disability modification knowledge is a must. Something as small as half an inch lowering of a van floor can affect driving and road views. Ask, too, about membership in the National Mobility Equipment Dealers Association or other vehicle conversion organization. Also question about warranties, staff training, ongoing services, driver training, costs, and replacement part availability.
