Empowerment in Managed Health Care: Who's Going to Do This When I'm Not Around? |
| Date: |
March 1-2, 1998 |
| Type: |
Conference presentation |
| Overview: |
Eighty conference participants met in Houston on March 1 and 2 in 1998 to discuss the impact of managed care on people with disabilities. Most of the time was spent in small-group workshops. Recommendations from these groups were many, including:
Be your own advocate, because many health providers don't seem to have interest in making a long-term investment in patients anymore.
Health information should be presented in a simple, understandable manner so accurate comparisons can be made.
Make sure a plan has a disability accommodation specialist and facilities with universal accessibility features.
Specialists should be the primary health care providers for people with disabilities. A person with multiple sclerosis, for example, should have a neurologist for a primary care provider.
A review of referral plans should be made to see what works best for people with disabilities.
An investigation of creative alternatives such as telemedicine or itinerant services should be made to allow increased choice and efficiency. #779
