Type: Conference presentation
Overview:

Eighty conference participants met in Houston on March 1 and 2 in 1998 to discuss the impact of managed care on people with disabilities. Most of the time was spent in small-group workshops. Recommendations from these groups were many, including:

  • Be your own advocate, because many health providers don't seem to have interest in making a long-term investment in patients anymore.
  • Health information should be presented in a simple, understandable manner so accurate comparisons can be made.
  • Make sure a plan has a disability accommodation specialist and facilities with universal accessibility features.
  • Specialists should be the primary health care providers for people with disabilities. A person with multiple sclerosis, for example, should have a neurologist for a primary care provider.
  • A review of referral plans should be made to see what works best for people with disabilities.
  • An investigation of creative alternatives such as telemedicine or itinerant services should be made to allow increased choice and efficiency. #779
