Overview:

The shopping list for installing handrails includes handrails, handrail mounting brackets (that come with plates), and wall anchors (if there aren't any wall studs). Rails come in eight- or 10-foot lengths, so measure the wall to find how many are needed. Figure one bracket six inches in from each rail end and one every 20 inches between rails.

Measure and mark installation areas. Make the height of the rail between the hip and elbow of the person using the rails. Use a 1/8-inch drill-bit for bracket holes. Screw brackets into wall studs or wall anchors. Rails can be cut with hand or power saw. Smooth ends with sandpaper, then lay the rail flat-side down on the bracket plate. Drill holes in the rails slightly smaller than the diameter of the bracket's screws. Screw the bracket plate into the rail. #420
