Overview:

The Suburban Mobility Authority for Regional Transportation in suburban Detroit began concentrating on making bus service accessible for people with disabilities in 1978. It was one of the first public transit agencies to require all future fixed-route bus purchases to be wheelchair accessible. Now SMART concentrates on providing routes and services for entry-level workers, seniors, and people with disabilities.

Because Detroit has no center hub, SMART has experimented with mixing smaller vehicles with fixed routes. More than half of SMART's fleet in fact are smaller vehicles. Its "Connector" services are flexible routing, Job Express feeder services, Dial-A-Ride, and Advanced Reservation.
