Overview:

Who are the best personal care assistants (PCAs)? Family may be among the first to offer help. But they may feel it is their "duty" and become resentful or demanding as time goes by. A PCA outside the family keeps the role of family and caregiver separate. College students often are available in the early morning and night when services are needed the most. They also may trade services for room and board. Students in physical therapy or other related fields may be interested in working with a person with a disability for field-related experience. Look for those who are punctual, trustworthy honest, have the ability to follow instructions, patient, and are comfortable following a routine.

When interviewing, have applicants fill out a brief, written form citing work experience and references. At the interview, ask:

  • Do you have dependable transportation?
  • What other responsibilities do you have?
  • Do you have any questions (after describing duties involved)?
